Nutria Rodeo participants set sights on menace swamp rodents
Those dirty rats better run for the hills.
The only problem for the nutria “rats” down around the vicinity of Venice Marina on Feb. 24-25 is that there aren’t any hills. So they’re in trouble.
More than 300 hunters have already signed up to take part in the Swamp Safari Shootout, more commonly called the Nutria Rodeo of Louisiana. The event starts at 8 a.m. on the first day and ends at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The “You dirty rat” movie line was one of the most famous quotes ever attributed to legendary actor James Cagney. And he probably didn’t even know about nutria.

2023 NUTRIA RODEO TO BE HELD FEB. 24-25: NEW PRIZE CATEGORIES, COOKOFF ADDED
The dates for the Nutria Rodeo Swamp Safari Shootout 2023, to be held in Venice, Louisiana, have been set for Feb. 24-25. The shooting event, which begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 and ends at the last weigh-in at Venice Marina (237 Sports Marina Rd, Venice, Louisiana 70091) on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6:00 p.m., will recognize those that bring in the largest nutria killed, most nutria per boat and nutria toss. Other events include a nutria cornhole tournament and nutria basketball shot.

Louisiana Nutria Rodeo Wrangles 1,900 Swamp Rats
About 200 hunters brought in some 1,900 nutria, also known as swamp rats, in the annual Nutria Rodeo in Louisiana.
In February, competitors took to the swamps around Venice, Louisiana, the tip of the state’s boot and legendary fishing area, to help control the state’s invasive nutria population. Nutria have been around for about 90 years, an invasive species originally imported from South America. They plow through vegetation that helps hold the swamps and marshes together. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, more than 8,300 acres of marsh was damaged by nutria in 2021, and it estimates that more than 40 square miles of coastline has been impacted by nutria in recent decades.
